Super Alphonso Mango Grow Guide

Contrary to popular belief, Super Alphonso is in no way related to the famous Alphonso Mango.

In fact, Super Alphonso doesn’t taste like Alphonso at all. However, the fruit is still delicious in it’s own right… IF you can harvest and consume it at the perfect time šŸ™‚ #Foreshadowing

With that being said, this grow guide will cover everything that you need to know about Super Alphonso Mango:

Super Alphonso Mango Tree Growth Habit & Fruit Production

Note: Since Super Alphonso is a newly released cultivar, we can only speculate about its long-term tree height and growth habit based on the parentage of the tree (see ‘Super Alphonso Mango History‘). As new information is discovered, I will update this page 😃

The Super Alphonso Mango isĀ speculated to be a medium to large-sized mango tree.

Super Alphonso Mangos likely haveĀ a very vigorous & spreading growth habitĀ that produces an open canopy. As a result, Super Alphonso canĀ realistically be kept between 15 – 20 feet tall with annual pruning. Super Alphonso would not likely do well long-term in containers and would not be considered a ā€œcondoā€ mango.Ā

Super Alphonso’sĀ fruit productionĀ consistently ranges from good to heavy. The mangos themselves areĀ medium to large-sized fruits that typically weigh between 1.5 – 2.0 lbs.

Super Alphonso Mango Flavor Profile

Super Alphonso Mangos are considered anĀ Indian Flavored Mango.

When perfectly ripe and mature, Super Alphonso will give off a mango aroma laced with strong sweet spices. Slicing into the fruit reveals a beautiful yellow, fiberless flesh that is smooth, juicy, and boasts a melting texture.

From a flavor perspective, Super Alphonso Mango has a dominant classic mango flavor with a balanced sweet & resinous spiciness with just the right amount of acidity that translates to subtle hints of citrus. Additionally, there is also a very pronounced coconut flavor in addition to an ever-so-slight tartness that gives the fruit a very tropical-tasting flavor. When eating near the skin, the resinous intensity exponentially increases.

Relative to other mango cultivars that I have sampled, Super Alphonso is very similar in a lot of ways to:

  • 0-15 (with the resinous flavor knob turned down)
  • Zill-80 (with the resinous flavor knob turned up)
  • Jakarta (with both the sweetness and classic mango knobs turned up)

As I mentioned earlier in this grow guide, Super Alphonso does not taste like Alphonso at all.

Overall, Super Alphonso’s flavor will beĀ mostly appreciated by those who are looking forĀ a classic mango flavor with a well-balanced resinous component that tastes very tropical.

Finally, it’s worth noting that Super Alphonso Mangos produce polyembryonic seeds, which means thatĀ planting a seed from a Super Alphonso Mango can yield another Super Alphonso Mango Tree.

Super Alphonso Mango Season (And When To Pick)

Super Alphonso Mangos areĀ considered a mid-season mango (June – July).

TheĀ best time to pick Super Alphonso Mangos are when they are mature green on the tree. In other words, we should NOT allow Super Alphonso to ripen on the tree. Even for experienced mango growers, Super Alphonso can be tricky to harvest at the right time.

With that being said,Ā here is what we should be looking for with Super Alphonso:

  • How does the stem look? It’s it drying up near where it connects to the fruit?
  • Fruit fullness & shapeĀ
  • Is the fruit’s skin beginning to stretch?

Upon harvesting at this stage, the fruit should be given 7-14 days to ripen at room temperature or above. This maturation period is critical for the fruit to properly develop its sweet tropical flavors. When picked too early/late, Super Alphonso can ripen unevenly, become wrinkly and develop sour & off-putting flavors.

From a color perspective, Super Alphonso isĀ perfectly ripe when the majority of the fruit transitions to a mixture of green and pale yellow with a very prominent crimson blush. However, it’s important to remember thatĀ a mango’s blush has nothing to do with the fruit’s ripeness.Ā A rule of thumb to remember is thatĀ More Sun = More Blush, Less Sun = Less Blush.

In addition to color, I also like to lightly press on the fruit and evaluate its firmness. What I am specifically looking for is the fruit to not be firm and to be more on the “mushy” side.

Super Alphonso Mango History

The Super Alphonso Mango was first propagated in Boynton Beach, Florida by Gary Zill.Ā This specific cultivar has gone by several different names including ’36-8′ and ‘India’ before settling on ‘Super Alphonso.’

Super Alphonso is a relatively new offering from Zill High Performance Plants, which was officially released in 2022.

Super Alphonso is a seedling of Zill-80 Mango. It’s pollinating parent is speculated to be Jakarta Mango.

Super Alphonso Mango Disease Resistance

Note: Since Super Alphonso is a newly released cultivar, we can only speculate about its disease resistance based on the parentage of the tree. As new information is discovered, I will update this page 😃

Both of Super Alphonso’s parents are descendants of Kent Mango. As a result, I speculate that Super Alphonso has poor disease resistance to both Anthracnose and Bacterial Black Spot.

If this does end up being the case, I would recommend not planting Super Alphonso in more humid areas and should instead be planted in drier areas, such as along the coast.
